So Long, Summer

I'll be honest, you're my least favorite season. I can't abide your heat and humidity, the mosquitoes and the fast-growing weeds everywhere. Autumn's been my favorite for as long as I can remember so by the time you roll around I'm already pining for cooler temps, changing leaves and foods and beverages flavored with apples and pumpkins. Having said that, you were remarkably mild, for the most part, this year. Thanks for that. I really appreciated it. And I really have enjoyed your fresh corn, tomatoes and peaches for the last few months. Well done, you. I'll try to make a concerted effort to dislike you less next year.

Hello, Old Friend

Our first proper hike in three months was an oldie but a goodie, the Alum Cave Trail. We made it to the cave itself and, considering how out of practice we are, I was delighted that we hiked it with such ease. It was a beautiful late summer day and I'm looking forward to getting back into our old routine of regular visits to the mountains now that the summer months are behind us.

Ah! Sun-flower!

Ah Sun-flower! weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the Sun:
Seeking after that sweet golden clime
Where the travellers journey is done.

Where the Youth pined away with desire,
And the pale Virgin shrouded in snow:
Arise from their graves and aspire,
Where my Sun-flower wishes to go.
